Sam Johnson was born in Newport News, Virginia and moved to Maine when he was 2 years old. He started playing piano at the age of 8, however his music started much earlier while singing in the church choir with his mother. In the 5th grade he joined the school concert band on clarinet. In 8th grade he picked up the electric bass and started playing in the school jazz band. By high school he was performing in every music group available to him inside and outside of school. He graduated High School with the National School Choral Award for his achievments.

After trying several majors in the University of Maine system, Sam finally moved to the University of Miami where he graduated on the Provost's Honor Roll with a degree in Jazz and Studio Music on Electric Bass.

After graduating, Sam was immediately contracted to play music on a cruise ship in the Mediterranean Sea where he worked for almost a year. In 2000 he moved to San Diego after completing his obligations to the cruise line. While in San Diego he started playing the Acoustic Bass and has found a new passion for this instrument that for so many years had baffled him.
